World of Valiant Writing: 6/27/11

In this week’s installment, I chastise the people who didn’t post anything, and praise the two who did.

Legend of Basara (episode 2)

From a design standpoint, I’m impressed by how often the animation mimics the poses and angles used in the original manga without looking forced. It’s natural but familiar; this is how Basara was meant to be animated. It’s a pity that the series was cut so short, but we’ve been left with something very, very good.

SNES: Mr. Nutz

Children are immensely impressionable; making games for children means developers aren’t bound by conventional rules and logic. Mr. Nutz is a thoroughly conventional game that uses “for children” to excuse the designers’ stifling laziness and lack of imagination, instead of using “for children” to open doors for creative minds that want to escape.

Although bright and colorful, the scenery is mundane, which compounds the dull pacing. Enemies rarely do more than walk or fly back and forth from left to right in set patterns.

World of Valiant Writing: 6/20/11

Please ignore the fact that it’s June 22. This is a recap of what the cool writers to the right have written as of 6/20!

FAQ: Arcus 2 – Silent Symphony (X68000)

Here are the secrets to winning at one of Wolf Team’s worst.

Dreamcast: House of the Dead 2

If you sit down with House of the Dead 2 for a good hour or two and experiment, the alternate paths and hidden bonuses allow for a great deal of exploration — something you won’t find in most other light gun games.

PS2: Sega Ages – Golden Axe

Since it’s on PS2 and has to cater to a new audience’s expectations, this 3D Ages remake starts with a half-cool, half-laughable story scene. Ancient murals depict the land of Yuria’s violent history, culminating in a stirring picture of Jesus bestowing the Golden Axe upon humanity.

I follow interesting people. Let’s see what they’re discussing this week, eh?

X360: Way of the Samurai 3

For an hour or two, miscreants should adore Way of the Samurai 3. Pay shopkeepers for goods, then murder them and reclaim your purse. As a farmer extolls the virtues of living with the land, draw your blade — which can be done during any cutscene — and cut him down.
