Decade in review: The Turbo Board

Everything starts somewhere; this is the story of where Unlimited Zig Works began.

X68000: Slime Master

Walking in a straight line isn’t exciting.

About perspective

I’ve noticed that writers sometimes talk about choosing the appropriate perspective to match their audience. Do we write this article for the “casual” gamer, or do we write this from the “core” gamer’s perspective? Who is likely to read our reviews and how do we meet them on their level?

PCE: Ai Cho Aniki (Super CD)

If you had a huge gaping hole in the top of your head, what would you do with it? Would you adorn it with an attractive beret? Or perhaps even cram a brain somewhere in there?

MD: El Viento Zero

The hidden “stage zero” contains no enemies, but it contains plenty of blood-spattered spike traps and exploding sea urchins that brutalize Annet if she touches them. Spinning coins grant additional magic powers, treasure chests wait to be collected, and HAPPY PHALLIC SQUID PEOPLE lurk in the alcoves.

Mushi-Uta (episodes 4-6)

The first set of Mushi-Uta episodes was bad. Really bad. This second set opens with a (relative) bang as two rival factions face off in an evacuated park. HOWEVER . . . . .

PS2: The Warriors

This is not a thinking man’s action game.

Mushi-Uta (episodes 1-3)

I’ve wanted to see this anime ever since I heard the theme song. It’s a really cool song. Based on the introductory visuals, Mushi-Uta combines Japanese childrens’ favorite things: guns, goggles, and bugs. It looks like a kids’ show, but that’s fine with me. Plenty of kiddie shows are cool. HOWEVER . . . . .

Legend of Basara (episode 1)

The Legend of Basara anime began in 1998, coinciding with the conclusion of Yumi Tamura’s 27-volume epic Basara manga. At only thirteen episodes, the animation only scratches the surface of the story, but it’s quite faithful and worth watching to get a glimpse into what Basara has to offer.
